... Heartbroken Brits reluctant to move on
25 September 2008

Britons are living with heartbreak, which is stopping them from getting back in the dating game, new research reveals.

A recent survey found that half of all singletons are suffering from a broken heart, while a further 27 per cent said they are still nursing wounds from a recent break-up.

UK singletons find it extremely hard to get over a former love and reported the heartbreak usually lasts for between six months and a year
.

Around 88 per cent of the singletons polled by a dating website said they have at some point spent too long upset about an ex boyfriend or girlfriend, with one in five saying that they always take too long to get over a past relationship.

When Britons are heartbroken, they turn to their friends and 73 per cent admitted that they may have spent far too long bending their friends' ears by going on about an ex for ages.

Heartbroken Brits are holding on to physical as well as emotional baggage related to an ex, with 75 per cent saying they have held on to reminders of their ex, despite knowing that it is not good for them.

Photos, love letters, jewellery, cuddly toys and ticket stubs were the items most likely to be kept following a break-up.
