Loved-up couples opt for Gretian nuptials 26 September 2008
Loved-up brides and grooms are ditching the gloomy British weather and opting to get married in Greece, new research reveals.
Figures from Ionian Weddings reveal a 60 per cent increase in the numbers choosing to have their nuptials in Greece in the past six months.
It seems that as the credit crunch bites, couples are looking for more affordable yet still romantic weddings
.
The average British wedding now costs a staggering £18,500, compared to an average of £2,500 on a beautiful Greek island.
Andreas Palikiras, marketing director of Ionian Weddings, said the company had initially been worried about the effects of the credit crunch on the wedding industry, but soon noticed an increase rather than a fall.
He said: "Many couples, who had originally planned to marry in the UK, are now coming to us because theyve witnessed yet another washout British summer, and the cost of a UK wedding spiral out of control.
"More and more husbands-and-wives-to-be choose to take advantage of the glorious Greek weather and warm hospitality and the prospect of marrying in a choice of beautiful outdoor locations for a fraction of the cost of a UK wedding."
