... Rubbish couple go on dream honeymoon
7 October 2008

A loved-up couple spent three months in the run-up to their wedding collecting rubbish in order to be able to pay for their honeymoon, according to reports.

John and Ann Till from Petersfield in Hampshire took advantage of a recycling scheme at their local Tesco supermarket which could convert their rubbish into Air Miles.

The couple needed 36,000 miles to be able to fly back business class from their US honeymoon
.

Although they already had tickets on the Queen Mary 2 cruise to New York they did not have enough money to fund the flight home and thought this was a novel way to pay for them.

For every four items they recycled they got a Tesco clubcard point and every 250 clubcard points earned them 600 air miles.

So they set about collecting litter every day for three months to be able to get enough.

Mr Till told the BBC: "We wanted to make our honeymoon special and were trying to think of ways to raise money for it.

"We worked out that it would be possible to turn rubbish into our flights - as long as we had enough."

He added: "At the very beginning, we were concerned it would not be achievable, but then we saw the amount of rubbish out there. It's not to say the pavements were awash with litter, it was when we looked over walls and in the undergrowth.

"There was enough rubbish out there to fly us to the moon and back."
